What is Adopt-A-Family?
Rutgers Against Hunger’s Adopt-A-Family program has been in existence since 2009. It’s purpose is to provide local families in need with basics such as food, clothing, and toys for the holidays. Each year, RAH teams up with about 13 social services agencies who provide us with information on their most disadvantaged families. We then look to members of the Rutgers community to sponsor those families for the holidays. This program brightens the spirits of hundreds of families each year, and perfectly demonstrates the generosity and kindness Rutgers University members have to offer.
How Does it Work?
Each of the ‘adopted’ families submits a Family Profile Form. These forms indicate the size, age, and interests of each family member. While those are being completed and collected, RAH works to secure sponsors within the university and community. Sponsors must fill out a Sponsorship Form by way of applying. This will inform us of whether the sponsor is applying as an individual or University department, of how many families/family members he or she is willing to support, and of all of the sponsor’s contact information. Finally, we compare our family forms to our sponsor forms and match them up as best as we can. Sponsors will be sent an email with their adopted family’s forms, as well as instructions on the next steps.
